Ingredients:

8 pork sausages 1 kg potatoes, peeled and chopped 100 ml milk 50 g butter 2 large onions, sliced 2 tbsp flour 500 ml beef stock 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 2 tbsp olive oil Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions:

Heat 1 tbsp olive oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the sausages and cook for about 15-20 minutes, turning occasionally, until browned and cooked through. Remove and set aside.
In the same pan, add another tbsp of olive oil and the sliced onions. Cook over medium heat for 10-15 minutes until they are caramelized. Stir in the flour and cook for another minute.
Gradually add the beef stock while stirring to prevent lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce and season with salt and pepper. Simmer for 5-7 minutes until the gravy thickens.
Meanwhile, boil the potatoes in salted water for about 15 minutes or until fork-tender. Drain and mash with butter and milk until smooth and creamy. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Serve the sausages over the mashed potatoes and pour the onion gravy on top. Enjoy!

The Origins of Bangers and Mash

Bangers and Mash has been a staple of British cuisine for generations. The term "bangers" originated during World War I, when sausages were made with a high-water content and would often explode when cooked. Over time, this dish became a symbol of comfort food, served in pubs and homes across the UK.

The Secret to Creamy Mashed Potatoes

The key to perfect mashed potatoes lies in selecting the right variety, such as Yukon Gold or Maris Piper. Boiling them until tender, then mashing with butter and warm milk, ensures a smooth texture. For extra creaminess, some chefs add a touch of sour cream or heavy cream to elevate the flavor.

Why Onion Gravy Completes the Dish

Onion gravy is what truly elevates Bangers and Mash. The slow-cooked caramelized onions bring a natural sweetness that complements the savory sausages and creamy mash. Worcestershire sauce and beef stock add depth, making it a rich and flavorful addition to this traditional meal.
