Ingredients:

2 cups all-purpose flour 1 cup granulated sugar 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened 1 cup milk 3 large eggs 1 tbsp baking powder 1 tsp vanilla extract 1/2 tsp salt 2 cups whole milk (for custard) 1/2 cup granulated sugar (for custard) 2 tbsp cornstarch 4 egg yolks 1 tsp vanilla extract (for custard) 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips 1/2 cup heavy cream

Instructions:

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans. In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar until fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well. Stir in vanilla extract. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with milk. Pour the batter into prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let the cakes cool completely.
To make the custard, heat the milk in a saucepan over medium heat. In a bowl, whisk the egg yolks, sugar, and cornstarch. Slowly add the heated milk while whisking. Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook until thickened. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract. Let it cool.
For the chocolate glaze, heat the heavy cream until warm and pour over chocolate chips. Stir until smooth. To assemble, place one cake layer on a plate, spread the custard, then top with the second cake. Pour the chocolate glaze over the top and let it set before serving.

The Origins of Boston Cream Pie

Boston Cream Pie was first created at the Parker House Hotel in Boston in the 19th century. This famous dessert is known for its layers of fluffy sponge cake, creamy custard filling, and a decadent chocolate glaze. Despite its name, it is a cake rather than a pie, making it a unique and beloved classic.

Perfecting the Custard Filling

The secret to a perfect Boston Cream Pie lies in its rich and smooth custard. The custard is made by whisking egg yolks, sugar, and cornstarch into warm milk, creating a thick and luscious texture. Using high-quality vanilla extract enhances the flavor, giving the filling its signature taste and making every bite delicious.

Tips for a Smooth Chocolate Glaze

A glossy chocolate glaze is essential for a perfect Boston Cream Pie. To achieve this, melt chocolate chips with warm heavy cream, stirring until smooth. Let it cool slightly before pouring over the cake to ensure a thick, even coating. Allow the glaze to set for a few minutes before serving for the best results.
