Slice the onions into thick rings and separate them. In a bowl, mix flour, baking powder, and salt. In another bowl, beat the egg and mix it with milk. Dip each onion ring into the flour mixture, then into the egg mixture, and finally coat it with breadcrumbs.
Heat the vegetable oil in a deep pan over medium-high heat. Fry the onion rings in batches for about 2-3 minutes per side or until golden brown. Remove them with a slotted spoon and place on a paper towel to drain excess oil.
Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce, such as ranch, barbecue, or spicy mayo. Enjoy crispy and delicious homemade onion rings!

The Secret to Extra Crispy Onion Rings

Achieving the perfect crispy onion ring requires a combination of batter consistency and frying technique. A thick batter ensures a crunchy outer layer, while using cold ingredients helps create a crispier texture. Double-dipping the rings in the flour and batter can also enhance the crunchiness.

Choosing the Best Onions for Onion Rings

Not all onions are created equal when it comes to making onion rings. Sweet onions, such as Vidalia or Walla Walla, are ideal due to their mild and slightly sweet flavor. Yellow onions work well for a more traditional taste, while red onions add a hint of sharpness and a pop of color.

Perfect Pairings: What to Serve with Onion Rings

Onion rings are a versatile side dish that pairs well with many main courses. They complement classic burgers, grilled steaks, and even hearty sandwiches. For a lighter meal, serve them alongside a fresh salad or with a dipping sauce like spicy aioli or honey mustard.
